Summer is one of the most popular times of year to capture moments for most couples. Everything is brighter, warmer, and the days are longer. Additionally, some of the best honeymoon destinations are in the summer. However, the summer comes with its set of drawbacks. Some of those drawbacks are sweat, gnats (If you are in the south), flies, heat, make up melting, and a whole list of other issues.
So recently, we did an engagement shoot with a couple in Charlotte, NC in August of 2022 and it was hot and humid. Not only was the temperature 88 degrees, but because of the humidity, it felt like 93 without a cloud in the sky. This brought up some of the same issues. Lots of light but lots of heat. This also reminded me of my wife and my wedding day in 2019 in Myrtle Beach, SC. It was hotter and more humid. So to fight this, I created 10 tips on how to "Beat The Heat" to help your photographer / videographer out when trying to capture the moments of the day.
1. Avoid the Hottest Part of the Day
Ideally, you want to avoid taking photos outside during the hottest parts of the day. It depends on where you live, but the summer heat usually peaks around 3 pm in most places.
2. Bring a Cooling Towel and Micro Fiber Cloth to Wedding or Photoshoot
We sometimes forget that we are mostly made of water and sweat is what keeps us cool. When it gets hot we sweat, some more then others. As a photographer, I keep a cloth on hand my for clients and myself. So remember, in the summer we sweat and it is hard to edit sweat. I learned that at my wedding.
3. Keep Water, Bring Water, Drink Water
Stay hydrated. Nothing more, nothing less
4. Dress in Light colored clothing
We always recommend light and airy clothing if possible. This is easy for the bridesmaid dresses, however, you may have to get creative for the men. For guests, this rule applies to them as well.
This day should be one of your best memories, not melted makeup, constant discomfort, and sweat.
5. Pack blotting papers and powder.
Stop shine on your nose and forehead by including plenty of blotting papers and powder in your purse or bag, and ask a bridesmaid or the person you are taking photos with to let you know when your skin might have a shiny look so that you don’t look oil-dipped in your important photos. Photographers can catch a lot of this but not all.
6. Skip the Perfume and Cologne.
You catch more FLIES and BEES with honey if you catch my drift. Skip the scent until later. No one wants to be surrounded all day and feeling nervous that they might get stung.
7. It Rains in the Summer so bring an umbrella just in case
Most climates experience all sorts of summer showers. Some of them surprise showers, others not.
8. Get a small Portable Fan
These fans can be life savers for you and the photographer. They are very cheap battery powered fans to keep you cool at all times. Here is a link to my favorite fan.
AND THERE YOU HAVE IT!
